How do you update a building known for its architecture and long history of being a landmark on Kennebunk’s Main Street? “Very carefully and with a lot of patience,” said Jim Dowe, project leader for the Main Street renovation and Facilities Manager at Kennebunk Savings. Originally constructed in 1806, the building located at104 Main Street has been home to Kennebunk Savings since it opened for business on May 1, 1871.
Today, the building anchors the picturesque streetscape of Kennebunk’s downtown. It is an iconic local landmark known for its colonial architecture, beautifully manicured gardens, and charming curb appeal. That’s why maintaining the Main Street building’s original architectural elements has been of utmost importance to the bank throughout the remodel of its interior. This renovation marks the first major upgrade to the interior of the bank since the 1980s.
Visitors will appreciate a brighter, more open and welcoming lobby and transaction area with improved office and meeting spaces that provide more options for privacy. Special attention was paid to the building’s interior architecture, the treatment of the large windows and even the antique clock that has hung on the wall for decades. Another significant change includes the replacement of the traditional tall teller counter with a lower profile counter that improves opportunities for interacting with customers.
As a nod to the history of Kennebunk’s downtown and the bank’s 147-year presence there, the lobby walls will showcase three large, historic photos of the area circa 1890 through 1940 furnished by the Brick Store Museum. “It was important that we honor the history of the bank, the distinctive qualities of the building’s architecture and our ongoing commitment to the success of the Town of Kennebunk,” said Bradford C. Paige, President of Kennebunk Savings since 2009.
The original structure was a three-story building that was completely rebuilt after burning down in 1870. After its reconstruction, Kennebunk Savings moved in and occupied a small room within Ocean National Bank. The building was enlarged in 1893 and again in1903 to accommodate the two banking institutions. Then in 1927, a new addition was authorized to the rear of the original structure. As the assets of the bank expanded and the area served by the bank grew, there became an even greater need for space. In 1965, Kennebunk Savings purchased the entire building and has had the honor of being its caretaker ever since.
