Mental Health Awareness Month was established in 1949 to increase awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness in Americans’ lives and to celebrate recovery from mental illness. For more than 20 years, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has recognized Mental Health Awareness Month (MHAM) every May to increase awareness about the vital role mental health plays in our overall health and well-being and provide resources and information to support individuals and communities who may need mental health support.
Mental Health Awareness Month is about more than just awareness. It’s about showing up for one another. Whether you’re living with a mental health condition, supporting a loved one, or advocating for change, there are programs, resources, and opportunities for support, connection, and healing. If you’re interested in learning more or participating in MHAM, here are several events hosted by or benefiting local mental health nonprofits.
The Greater Dover Chamber of Commerce and Dover Mental Health Alliance will present Resilience in the Workplace: Creating a Psychologically Safe Culture, a forum exploring the connections between mental health, wellness and recovery in professional environments. The event will be held Tuesday, May 19 from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at 121 Broadway in Dover. More information is available here.
Also on May 19th, Songwriters in the Round at Vinegar Hill will feature Sweetser as the evening’s beneficiary. Sweetser is a behavioral health nonprofit that provides evidence-based treatment, support and hope through a statewide network of community-based mental health, recovery, and educational services.
On Wednesday, May 20h, the Hampton Chamber of Commerce is hosting their monthly Business After Hours event at the new Conservatory event space at The Brook in Seabrook, NH. Seacoast Mental Health Center is the featured non-profit that evening.
In Portland on May 26th, Brickyard Hollow is hosting a community night for Sweetser, where a portion of the proceeds that evening supports their mental health programs and services.
