What does a Commercial Banking Trainee do?

The incumbent will perform a customized rotation through the functions of the Bank’s Commercial Credit and Lending Departments over a period of up to 18 months. During the first 12 months trainees will receive exposure, education and practical hands-on experience in all elements of the commercial credit process. Through a combination of mentoring and formal/informal instruction, the incumbent will gain commercial credit skills through exposure to the systems, processes and strategies utilized by the Credit Department’s set-up, underwriting, processing/closing and portfolio management areas. In addition, the incumbent will rotate through the frontline Commercial Lending area, including introductions to the various lending origination roles.

Upon successful completion of the rotation, the incumbent will spend up to 6 months working in commercial underwriting honing their credit skills before being placed into a position in the Commercial Credit, Commercial Lending, Lending Assurance or other lending area based on the incumbent’s Interest, aptitude, previous experience and the Bank’s current needs.

While this will be an active training position, the incumbent will be presented with actual “real world” assignments with deadlines based on customer and Bank needs. As with any position, the expectation is that this work will be completed accurately and on time. In addition to gaining an overall understanding and familiarity with the Commercial Credit Policy and related processes and procedures, the incumbent will be exposed to and be expected to gain a level of proficiency in the following areas:

Essential Functions

Workflow Management:

  • Managing a loan pipeline while meeting established Service Level Agreements (SLAs)
  • Managing timely receipt of current financial information and other pertinent information to create a complete loan package
  • Providing proactive and on-going communication with lenders regarding the status of their loans in the Department’s pipeline

Document Review/Underwriting Analysis Tasks:

  • Accurately performing financial statement spreading
  • Analyzing financial statements for guarantors and businesses
  • Recognizing trends and creating responses regarding the feasibility of credit requests
  • Preparing well-written financial analysis for presentation to loan officers and/or loan committee
  • Providing loan approval recommendations to appropriate lending authorities
  • Performing research on clients, the Bank’s markets and other related topics
  • Gaining exposure to the commercial loan approval process by completing analysis used in credit approval documents and memos
  • Developing a working knowledge of the Bank’s Commercial Credit Policy and the ability to communicate its interpretation and rationale to other Bank employees
  • Recognizing, identifying and quantifying business risks

Maintain Various Reports and Update Data Used to Track Performance:

  • Ensuring financial analysis reports are completed with a focus on accuracy, quality, and within SLAs
  • Preparing written reports of loan review findings

  • Prior knowledge of regulations within the financial services industry is preferred

Desired Job Experience

  •  1+ years of banking or relevant business experience is preferred
  • Experience in a professional, service focused and fast-paced environment

Desired Education

  • Two or four year college degree
  • Financial Accounting education or experience

Working Conditions/Minimum Physical Requirements

  • Physical surroundings are generally pleasant and comfortable with minimal exposure to injury or other hazards
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer and other office equipment
  • Lifting and moving of moderately heavy objects on occasion
  • Normally seated for extended periods of time
