The Huntington Common Charitable Fund for Seniors of the Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation Begins Accepting Proposals

In May 2006 the Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation announced the establishment of a $3 million endowed fund to benefit York County seniors. The fund, known as the Huntington Common Charitable Fund for Seniors of the Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation, was founded as a result of the sale of the previously nonprofit Huntington Common Retirement Living Community of Kennebunk to Sunrise Senior Living of Virginia. As a first step toward making contributions to benefit area seniors, the Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation announces that it is requesting proposals from nonprofit organizations. The Board of Advisors has been formed and will meet quarterly to evaluate proposals and make recommendations to the Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation. The next meeting of the Board of Advisors is set for late May and grant recipients will be announced in July. It is expected that the new Fund of the Foundation will distribute $100,000 to York County seniors in 2007.

David McConnell, longtime Kennebunk resident, former Headmaster of Kennebunk High School, former executive director for the Kennebunk Beach Improvement Association and now a member of the Board of Advisors spoke about the Fund, “When we envisioned establishing this Fund we were compelled by how Kennebunk Savings Bank has become a true leader in charitable giving. It was our hope to build upon what the Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation has established and offer up an additional opportunity for seniors to benefit. We see the Fund making a real difference this year and hope that this announcement will garner some creative and beneficial proposals.”

Guided by a Board of Advisors, the Fund will be used for the goal of helping seniors (ages 65 and older) throughout York County lead more complete and fulfilled lives. As with the Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation, of which it is a part, five categories of giving will be considered in evaluating requests, including: Arts & Culture, Civic, Education, Environment, and Human Needs. Members of the Board of Advisors include: Doug Stockbridge, David McConnell, Bill Gilpatric, Joel Stevens and Kathryn S.B. Davis.
