The Kennebunk Savings Foundation recently contributed $50,000 to the
Landing School of Boatbuilding and Design in Arundel to fulfill a
challenge grant issued in 2005 to the school’s Capital Campaign.
Established in 1978, the non-profit school draws students from
around the world because of its reputation in the field of marine
industry education. That reputation, its contribution to the local
economy, and both the prestige it brings to the Southern Maine area
as well as its dedication to the improvement of the marine services
industry made The Landing School a perfect candidate for the grant.
“The Landing School’s international reputation and that of its
graduates make it a destination for many students and marine
industry employers, and we’re pleased to be able to support them as
they look toward the future,” said Joel Stevens, Kennebunk Savings
Bank President and CEO.
“The grant was great because it was a challenge grant,” said The
Landing School President Barry Acker. “It gave us a certain amount
of time to develop matching grant funds. It was an effective
incentive, and we had it matched within weeks.” Acker said the funds
will be used for Phase Three of the school's current capital
campaign and will go toward the construction of a new building. That
new building will be constructed within the footprint of two
existing buildings and will provide space for expansion of the yacht
design program, a new composites program, classrooms, and the Center
for Continuing Education, as well as administrative offices and the
school's first full-size library. "We're breaking ground this
spring," he said, adding that the Kennebunk Savings Foundation's
grant, in conjunction with others, made the timing possible. For
