Kennebunk Savings Puts Garrison Reconstruction Over the Top

KITTERY, Maine — Thanks to an initial $10,000 grant in 2002 and an additional challenge grant of $10,000, the Kittery Historical and Naval Museum will be able to complete the reconstruction of the Andrews-Mitchell Garrison within the new addition, and add a second story within the original building for the storage of artifacts.

In making the presentation of the final $10,000 which capped fundraising of over $120,000, Linda Chisholm, assistant vice president and manager of Kennebunk Savings Bank’s Kittery office noted, “We are so proud to have been able to make this contribution in the name of all our customers in this area. I know I speak for them when I congratulate and commend the Kittery Historical and Naval Museum on all they do to make our community and our county a better place to live and work.”

The garrison will become a center for the local museum in interpreting local history of the pre-Revolutionary period. At one time, there were 41 houses designated as garrisons in the town of Kittery. The Andrews-Mitchell reconstruction will be the only remaining example of the original timber construction to be open to the public. The museum is located on Rogers Road, next to the Town Hall.

The museum took on the project of reconstructing the garrison in 2001. It had originally stood near the York line and was carefully dismantled in 1977. Its original donors, the late Captain Sidney and Beatrice Helliwell, made the gift in the hopes it could be preserved and one day be used in educational programs. Work also was undertaken by the museum to uncover artifacts on the site and determine original dimensions.

“We are delighted with the support that the museum has been successful in generating for this project,” said Joel Stevens, president and CEO of Kennebunk Savings. “And we are especially pleased with the role our contributions have made in this effort. It has been wonderful to see how the museum’s volunteers and board have been able to leverage our grants to gain support from foundations and local businesses, as well as individuals. We believe that this tangible piece of our heritage will enrich the learning experience for visitors and schoolchildren alike.”
