Biddeford Free Clinic Receives Special Surprise

Kennebunk Savings Bank Delivers Surprise Check for $2,670 to Biddeford Free Clinic

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Dr. Francis Kleeman, founder and president of Biddeford Free Clinic, and Joan Gordon, director of Biddeford Free Clinic, received a welcome surprise when Rick Rouillard, business development officer of Kennebunk Savings Bank presented them with an unsolicited check for $2,670.

This check was a strong show of support from the customers of Kennebunk Savings Bank and its subsidiary, Morris Insurance, who voted for the clinic on the bank’s annual Community Investment Ballot.

Each spring, Kennebunk Savings and Morris Insurance sends a ballot listing over 100 area non-profit and charitable organizations to their customers asking them to cast their vote. The returned ballots are tabulated and Kennebunk Savings Bank and its foundation allocate a substantial portion of their Community Investment Program dollars based on the votes for each organization. This year, $114,000 in unsolicited funds are being distributed to 147 non-profit and charitable organizations through votes received on the Community Investment Ballot. The average grant amount is almost $800 and, this year over forty organizations will be receiving grants in excess of $1,000.

“This check is a tribute to all the volunteers who devote their time to the clinic,” said Rouillard. “Our customers know they are a valuable community resource and I’m very happy we can contribute so significantly to the clinic this year through the ballot.”

Other of this year’s top award recipients include Hospice of York with $4,086; Senior Needs Committee of Wells and Ogunquit with $3,578; York County Chapter of American Red Cross with $2,777 and York County Habitat for Humanity with $2,377

The ballot is just one part of the Kennebunk Savings Bank’s Community Investment Program which also features volunteer awards and community grants. Begun in 1994, Kennebunk Savings Bank returns 10% of its annual earnings to non-profit and charitable groups throughout York County. In 2002, Kennebunk Savings Bank took the program to a new level by funding the Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation to ensure the continuity of the Community Investment Program in the years to come. By year end 2003, the bank’s Community Investment Program will have contributed over $3 million to charitable and non-profit organizations throughout York County.

Kennebunk Savings Bank, a winner of the Maine Businesses for Social Responsibility Eagle Feather Award, is York County’s leading financial institution.
