Charities Get Surprise Checks

$114,000 in Unsolicited Gifts goes to Southern Maine Charities this Month

KENNEBUNK – Customers of Kennebunk Savings Bank and Morris Insurance have voiced their support for 147 non-profit and charitable organizations throughout York County by voting in this year’s Community Investment Ballot funded by Kennebunk Savings Bank and the Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation. Organizations will begin receiving unsolicited gifts this week from the Community Investment Ballot program totaling $114,000.

Each year, Kennebunk Savings and Morris Insurance customers receive ballots asking for help in allocating a sizeable portion of the bank’s and the foundation’s Community Investment Program. Customers vote for one charity of their choice and the number of votes each organization receives determines the amount of money to be granted to that organization. Over 4,000 customers returned ballots this year. The average grant amount this year is over $800 and forty-one organizations will be receiving unsolicited grants over $1,000.

This year’s top ten award recipients include Animal Welfare Society, Hospice of York, York Hospital, York County Child Abuse and Neglect Council, Senior Needs Committee of Wells and Ogunquit, Great Works Regional Land Trust, Center for Wildlife, Visiting Nurse Service of Southern Maine, York County Chapter of American Red Cross and Caring Unlimited, Inc.

The ballot is just one part of the Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation’s Community Investment Program. Beginning in 1994, Kennebunk Savings Bank pledged to return 10% of its annual earnings to non-profit and charitable groups throughout York County. In 2002, Kennebunk Savings Bank took the program to a new level by funding the Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation to ensure the continuity of the Community Investment Program in the years to come. In 2003, the Community Investment Program will contribute $570,000 to charitable and non-profit organizations throughout York County, making the total contribution since 1994 over $3 million.

Kennebunk Savings Bank, a 2001 winner of the Maine Businesses for Social Responsibility Eagle Feather Award, is York County’s leading financial institution. With eleven banking offices from Sanford to Kittery, Kennebunk Savings has a complete line of retail and business banking products and also offers personal and commercial insurance through its subsidiary, Morris Insurance Services, Inc. In addition, Kennebunk Savings has a strong commitment to York County’s business community and has twice earned the Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) Bank of the Year Award and is a Small Business Administration (SBA) Preferred Lender.
