KENNEBUNKPORT – The Phyllis A. Maritime Heritage Museum kicked off
its 2003 season in style last Tuesday evening with a reception
featuring the boat’s namesake, Phyllis Arnold Wagner; the most
recent captain of the boat, Richard Arnold; and a presentation to
sponsor, Kennebunk Savings Bank.
Phyllis
A., a 56’ Eastern-rigged fishing vessel built in Kennebunkport in
1925, will be open free of charge to the public again this year thanks
to the sponsorship of Kennebunk Savings Bank. Boating and history
buffs can tour the boat and museum throughout the summer from mid May
through mid October. Last year, the museum had over 1,000 visitors
wanting to learn about Kennebunkport’s historic shipbuilding
days.
The historic fishing vessel was built in 1925 at the Warner Shipyard
in Kennebunkport. For 75 years, the Arnold family from Gloucester
fished and maintained the boat. The boat was delivered back to
Kennebunkport in the spring of 2001 and was refurbished and renovated.
