York County Child Abuse and Neglect Council and Kennebunk Savings Offer Community a Challenge

Kennebunk Savings Foundation grants $10,000 gift and dollar for dollar match up to an additional $10,000

KENNEBUNK, Maine -- When executive director, Kate Stern, was told that her organization, York County Child Abuse & Neglect Council, would need to move by the end of the year, she knew she was going to need help. A long and thorough search resulted in finding a Kennebunk office condo that would offer the space needed for the Council to continue its work, a more central location in York County, and space for a community resource room. The Council knew they would need community support to fund this important venture.

The Council was able to put a down payment on the condo using reserve money but that payment could put many of this year’s projects in jeopardy without large contributions of additional funds. In addition, their monthly mortgage has increased from what they used to pay in rent, making it especially important to raise more funds than usual at this time.

That is when they turned to the Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation for help. The foundation, aware of the worthwhile mission of the York County Child Abuse & Neglect Council and their record as an agency, offered two grants: one to help YCCANC immediately and another to encourage others to contribute. The foundation gave the council $10,000 at the end of December for use in their down payment. In addition, they have pledged to match, dollar for dollar, every contribution made to YCCANC from now through March 31, 2003 up to an additional $10,000.

"The York County Child Abuse and Neglect Council is an organization that addresses an important issue affecting everyone in our community," notes Joel Stevens, president and CEO of Kennebunk Savings Bank. "The work they do with parents, families and our schools creates the strong foundations that sustain our community and needs to be supported." The council reaches out to over 5,000 parents in York County through: presentations including Talking to Your Child About Personal Body Safety and Positive Discipline Techniques ; newsletters to parents; and parenting tips on PTO Newsletters and lunch menus. In addition, YCCANC also presents programs at schools across York County focusing on topics such as personal body safety, self respect and respect for peers, how to report abuse, and the responsibilities involved in having a baby. The Council also offers several training programs and resources for professionals who work with youth..

The Council is currently meeting with other businesses to help raise more funds and welcomes personal and business contributions of all amounts. "We are extremely grateful to the Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation for leading the way in our fundraising efforts," explains Stern. "The first $10,000 will go toward our down payment and we hope to be able to raise at least an additional $10,000 from the community by April in order to receive the matching funds from the foundation as well. It is only when the community comes together that child abuse can be prevented."

If you are interested in contributing to the agency, please call 985-5975 or send a check to York County Child Abuse and Neglect Council, 62 Portland Road, Suite 15, Kennebunk, ME 04043.

In order for the matching challenge to be met, an additional $10,000 must be raised within the community by April 1, 2003.
