KENNEBUNK, Maine - An ambitious preservation effort by the Kittery
Historical & Naval Museum has gained additional financial support
from the Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation. The foundation has pledged
$20,000 to the museum’s restoration of the Andrews Mitchell
Garrison. Half of the foundation’s contribution was awarded this
summer. The second $10,000 will be awarded when the group is
successful in reaching $110,000 toward their $120,000 overall
goal.
The Andrews Mitchell Garrison was painstakingly dismantled in the late
1970s and has been stored in anticipation of a restoration effort.
While the original construction date cannot be pinpointed, it is
believed that all or part of the garrison dates back to the mid-17th
century. Along with restoring the garrison, funds raised will also be
used to build an addition to the museum’s current facility which
will house the restored garrison. A second floor to the museum will
also be built to allow for more storage space for the museum’s
valuable artifacts.
"We
are extremely grateful to the Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation for
taking a lead role in our fundraising efforts," notes museum
board member, Carole Helliwell. "Their contribution not only
substantially raises our funds but also endorses the restoration as a
very worthwhile project." According to Helliwell, the group is
halfway to their goal and they’ve broken ground for the project,
which sits directly across from the Kittery Town Hall.
"By offering a challenge grant, organizations often are able to
gain an edge in their fundraising," explains Linda Chisholm,
Kennebunk Savings Bank’s Kittery banking office manager. "They
can leverage the gift for contributions from other individuals,
businesses and foundations in our community." Chisholm notes that
the foundation was interested in the Andrews Mitchell Garrison
restoration because of the strong support it has received from the
community. "We opened our office in Kittery in May of 2002, just
before the community phase of the fundraising campaign began. We are
pleased to be involved in supporting the museum’s work and the
reconstruction of this unique example of construction done by York
County’s early settlers."

The Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation was funded by Kennebunk Savings
Bank in 2001 to ensure a continuous resource for non-profit and
charitable organizations in York County. The goals of the Kennebunk
Savings Bank Foundation’s Community Investment Program are to invest
in community development programs with lasting impact, to encourage
residents to become involved in the communities of York County, and to
provide local organizations a source of funding that is driven by
local values. The Foundation focuses its support in five key areas:
human services, the arts; civic initiatives; education and the
environment.
