SANFORD, Maine - The Sanford Kiwanis-Merle E. Porell Free Clinic was
recently provided with a $1,000 grant from the Kennebunk Savings Bank
Foundation to support their good work.
The clinic, which is open one evening a week, is located at the
Goodall Wellness Center on 13 July Street and has been serving
uninsured patients since 1995. Staff at the clinic consists of over
125 volunteers including physicians, physician assistants,
pharmacists, nurses, and non-medical personnel. In the seven years
since it was founded, it has served over 2,500 patients. The majority
of the clinic’s operating budget is devoted to the purchase of
pharmaceuticals, which are dispensed free of charge to patients unable
to pay.
Due
to a combination of the rising costs of prescription medicine and the
recent industrial layoffs in the greater Sanford area there is a
greater need for funds this year. "We know what an impact the
free clinic has on our community," says Susan Morgan, Kennebunk
Savings Bank Sanford Banking Office Manager. "Thanks to the
voluntary nature of their staffing, they are able to do a tremendous
amount of work with very modest resources. We’re pleased to provide
this grant of $1,000 so they can continue to meet needs during a time
of increasing costs."
The Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation was funded by Kennebunk Savings
Bank in 2001 to ensure a continuous resource for non-profit and
charitable organizations in York County. The goals of the Kennebunk
Savings Bank Foundation’s Community Investment Program are to invest
in community development programs with lasting impact, to encourage
residents to become involved in the communities of York County, and to
provide local organizations a source of funding that is driven by
local values. The Foundation focuses its support in five key areas:
human services, the arts; civic initiatives; education and the
environment.
