Brick Store Museum Exhibit Looks Back to Simpler Time

Enduring Charm Exhibit Open Until December 20

KENNEBUNK, Maine - America had been urbanized and industrialized, its population expanded greatly and its political unity challenged. Yet many were nostalgic for the past and sought comfort in the image of a simpler, more serene United States. While this may sound like something happening today, the Enduring Charm exhibit at the Brick Store Museum in Kennebunk depicts this longing for the past as it took place in the late 1800s.

Enduring Charm: Colonial Revival in the Kennebunks, sponsored by Kennebunk Savings Bank, explores the art, design, and architecture in the late 1800s inspired by the Colonial and Federal eras. As people envisioned a simpler time, early American architecture, gardens, and family heirlooms found their way back into their day-to-day lives. Marcene Molinaro, executive director of the Brick Store Museum, notes that "The exhibit has been one of our most successful. We are appealing to a broad audience of people interested in the Kennebunks, and turn of the last century history as well as those interested in decorative arts. We are delighted that Kennebunk Savings enabled us to bring together this exhibit."

The Brick Store exhibit focuses on Kennebunk antiquarian and architect William E. Barry. Barry spent hours sketching the architecture of the Kennebunks, which had retained its "enduring charm" with its Colonial (1700-1780) and Federal buildings (1780-1820) still in tact. Barry also created many architectural models of these local structures. These impressive models, constructed around 1880, made of paperboard and hand painted, are found throughout the exhibit.

Kennebunk Savings Bank contributed $10,000 to help the Brick Store Museum bring Enduring Charm to the public. "This exhibit is such an important look at the history of Kennebunk and New England," notes Kennebunk Savings President and CEO, Joel Stevens. "History continues to repeat itself and this exhibit proves we are not alone in our nostalgia for the calmer times."
